  • GE Profile Arctica Filter Cracked!

Has anyone heard of an Icemaker refrigerator filter cracking?

I came back to my house on Christmas day and saw my kitchen and basement flooded. Opening the refrigerator released a gush of water. The water was coming from the filter and upon removal of the filter, it was cracked.

Water pressure in the house has been checked which was 60 (?Units) which is 20 below the normal tolerance.

    What in the world happened?

    Cracked filter

How long had the filter been installed? We have heard of several issues where filters crack due to water freezing inside of the filter. This can happen if the thermostat is set too low or if the thermostat is not working properly. Typically, a damaged filter will leak immediately upon install if the filter was defective. Water hammer is also a possible cause where the pressure may have exceeded your usual water pressure in short bursts due to a sudden change in flow velocity in your water pipes.

      Thank you for the reply.

      Four months, I believe.

The thermostat I had was set higher than usual. I think the freezer is set at 4 degrees. I don't recall the refrig temp.

      What causes water hammer?

I installed a new filter and no leak has occurred.
