Whirlpool ED2SHAXMQ10 - Filter Light

The filter light went to 'yellow'. While waiting to replace the filter, I experienced a short electrical power failure. Upon opening the refrigerator door, I noticed the light had returned to 'green'. I waited several days to see if it would return to yellow, which it did not. I then replaced the filter.

What good is this indicator light? If a normal power failure, resets this light, you can't depend on it for filter changes. A call to customer service was fruitless. I will now change the filter every six months regardless of light color.

Can anyone enlighten me on this?

Indicator Lights on refrigerators actually have no way of knowing when your filter is "dirty" or needs to be changed. Basically they are set to go off after a pre-set amount of water passes through the filter. So for instance, if a manufacturer tests the filter and sets the capacity at 500 gallons they will set the indicator light to go off once 500 gallons of water has been dispensed from your fridge. You should be safe changing your filter every 6 months unless you notice a decrease in flow rate before then--which would indicate that the filter is dirty and needs to be changed.
