How to remove "old" filter?

I have a new replacement Maytag UKF8001 filter. I cannot remove the old filter. Is there a trick, other than, or in addition to, turning it counter-clockwise?

It is not typical for the filter to be stuck like this. There is an automatic water shutoff feature with these filters, but there may be pressure in the system that is making it a little more difficult.

Try turning off the water from behind the refrigerator. Then, press the water dispenser on the refrigerator with the filter still installed for a second or two.

This will relieve the pressure in the system and should allow the filter to be removed a little easier.
