i am looking at getting an ro unit and have read that a booster pump will decrease my waste and also speed up the refil times. .... dependant on water pressure. i run about 55psi on a private well. is this something i should consider? thanks

A booster pump placed before the membrane can show much improvement in production. There are also delivery pumps that send water top the faucets with much great flow rate as well.
These can be added later, so if your RO installation is done without one, and you are satisfied with the production, then you don't need to add one. The electric pumps produce higher pressure but cost more and make more noise.
Here is an example of an RO with a booster pump.

First if you have already installed RO system and its running fine then you don't need to invest in pump but if the flow of water is very slow that it consuming so long time to make the water filter for just a jug then better you install booster pump. There is no much high impact of the pump on the functionality of RO system so not need to worry...

I will try to give you more tech data. I hope it is not to much but there are a few factors when finding out membrane production.
Assuming you have 77 degree water with less than 500 ppm with a 50 gpd membrane use the below to calculate production for psi.
membrane rated psi / production
50 gpd / 65 psi = 0.769 gpp gallons per psi
actual pressure is 55 psi, so.....
55 x .769 = 42.307 gallons per day
You also have to figure temperature
for example a 50 gpd membrane will only produce about 25 gpd at 50 degrees.
I would suggest to use a booster pump if you have the following conditions...
less than 50 psi
more that 500 ppm
temperature under 50 degrees
ora combanation of all 3
Another example if you have a 50 gpd system at 50 degrees 1000 ppm tds and 50 psi.
Projected outut without booster pump
13.457 GPD
Projected output with booster pump
30.76 GPD
I would say you most likely don't need a booster pump, but if you have money to burn it would not hurt.
