  • Two RO questions

    Hi!

I installed a brand-new RO system about 6 months ago. We bought the Costco Watts Premier RO Plus. It is a 4-stage system with a Sediment, RO, Pre-Carbon, and Carbon-Block filter set.

Recently, the "change filters" light came on. So, I went out and purchased a one-year replacement set.

    Verrry. Expensive.

Trying to be smarter about things, I also bought a new TDS meter, figuring that I might be able to push out the actual filter set replacement to a much longer period than every 6 months.

Our house cold water tap reads 646 TDS. The RO faucet reads 14 TDS. I calculate the system efficiency at 97.8%.

First question: Is a value of 14 for our RO water too high? Should it be almost 0? Unfortunately, I don't know what the TDS readings were when I first installed the system.

Second question: Can I use the TDS meter to determine when I should be replacing the Sediment, Pre-Carbon, and Carbon-Block?

Note: I would replace all the filters in our old RO system once every 2 years. When I pulled the old filters out of the system, they all looked almost new, including the two sediment filters.

    Thanks,

    AzJazz

The RO system will not be perfect, but it should be at a high percentage reduction.

The tds reading of 646 ppm is rather high, so 14 ppm is good reduction.

When the filtration drops below 85 to 90 percent, its typically time to change the filters. This is just personal preference though.
