Kinetico K5 Water Waste?

Hi,

I had my main water line replaced last week. Water company came out and said you still have a leak as the small triangle leak detector was moving about 1/4 turn per minute.

Turned off Water Softener, all shutoffs to all sprinklers, tested toilets, and still the slow leak.

Finally tried turning off valves to K5 and then checked and now Water Meter has stopped completely. Turned back on the valves and water meter is still stopped.

Talked to my Kinetico dealer and he said the K5 can use approx 1 shot glass per hour even when it is not in use so he said the above was normal.

Can anyone confirm? Just hard believe it is using water while sitting idle. Also can't explain why since I closed and opened the valves it is not using water when idle.

Also, curious how efficient is the K5 during normal drinking water production since I am in NorCal with the drought and all.

In the world of reverse osmosis units for residential use, the K5 is bout the most efficient unit you are going to find with a 3:1 ratio of waste to product water. The unit obviously runs to the drain while producing water so the question is: was the tank filling after use when you checked the meter? To check to see if it runs to the drain...you will need a valve installed between the unit and the tank on the green line. Close the valve, simulating a full tank. At that point the unit will go through the membrane rinse and shutdown procedure. After a few minutes there should be no flow to the drain. If there is...there is an issue with the unit and you need a service call. Hope that helps.

Not sure what happened but since I turned off the valves to the RO and back on there has been no more leaking from the K5.
