    i'm glad to have found this forum, i've spent hours on the web without being able to formulate a clear plan. i'm buying a house with a shallow well and i'm intending to install a whole house system ending with a uv unit. test results are as follows;

    coliform - present
    e coli - absent

    chlorine - not detected

    copper - .08 mg/l
    iron - .52 mg/l
    manganese - .13 mg/l

    chloride - 15 mg/l
    hardness 28 mg/l
    sodium 8.5 mg/l
    sulfate 7.6 mg/l

    nitrate as N - ND
    nitrite as N - ND

    color - 15 cu
    odor - 0
    ph - 6.4 su
    turbidity - 2.1 NTU

    there is presently no filtration in use and the house has mainly been a weekend home, though we will be living there full time. ideally i'd like to avoid a system requiring a backwash cycle simply to keep total water usage down, however what i've read so far suggests that a ph of 6.4 is a little too low to be able to just use sediment and carbon stages to get the water clear enough for effective uv treatment.

    i was thinking of going with 20" filters just to keep the rated flow rate up. there will normally only be two of us in the house, so i don't think our usage will be high, but i'd like our flow rate ceiling to be higher than what we'd ever expect to use and i understand that will also aid in the effectiveness of the uv stage.

    i'll also be replacing the pump and pressure tank as they're both clearly past their useful life.

    EDIT; maybe i should rephrase the original question -

    is a filter stage that requires a backwash cycle necessary for this water condition?

    in doing a little more digging, i'm wondering about this cartridge filter configuration;

    Stage 1;
    Pentek DGD-2501-20 sediment filter

    Stage 2;
    KDF 85 filter (Omnifilter R06? though i'd prefer a 20" in the hopes of a greater total filtering capacity)

    Stage 3;
    KX Matrikx 06-425-200-20 carbon filter

    Stage 4;
    UV

    i'm wondering if this removes enough iron and TDS to be clear enough for effective UV treatment. it's not clear to me if the 6.4 pH is too low for the KDF 85 to do its job.

            I would probably recommend an acid neutralizer, followed with a 30 micron filter, followed by a softener, followed by a second filter (5 micron) and finished up with a UV light. Get a quote from a water treatment expert in your area and go from there.

                Everything recommended by pawaterguy is accurate, and we do offer acid neutralizers and water softeners that will aid in this. You will just want to get the proper filter media capacity for your water filtration needs based on water quality and usage.

                For iron reduction, the RFFE20-BB requires a pH of 7.0 or greater. KDF-85 media filter which removes ferrous iron and hydrogen sulfide typically requires a pH between 6.5 and 8.5.
