  • Hot Water filter question

    Hi,
    any experts here? I built a house about 18 months ago, put in whole house filter, all set there, AND a filter in front of my tankless water heater to keep buildup down as these units are pricey. I've also purchased this phosphate filter from the site:

    But I've not installed it as i can't find ANYTHING about the safety OR lack thereof from ingesting water that passes through this filter.
    This wouldn't normally happen, one pretty much starts with cold water for any cooking, but I have a touchless kitchen faucet that is set to very warm in auto mode.
    If one happens to not think and fill a glass, even though the water from this faucet (or a bathroom until it warms up) would be cool and one may not think about it.

    SO, my question is, is water passing through this filter safe to drink in small quantities?

    Generally, the phosphates in any of these types of things is food grade and harmless. The issue goes beyond just that. There is no way of controlling the amount of them in the water. First draw after sitting for a while will be higher in phosphates than after running water for a bit. They don't dissolve in that quickly so you're better than nothing (maybe) but not really doing much in terms of preventing damage to the tankless water heater. These units are very particular about water quality. If the water isn't soft most manufacturers void any warranty on the heat exchanger due to how quickly they will plug up and have issues. If you want to use phosphates as a way around softening and other treatment...I would suggest going about it with a feed pump and injecting a liquid phosphate solution. You can precisely set and control how much is going into the water and adjust accordingly. Of course, it is going to amount to some cost. It's generally easier to filter, soften etc. I hope something in there was helpful. It may not have been what you were looking for...but, I would not put my money on a cartridge like that to protect the investment of a tankless water heater.

      Thanks very much for the response. The water here is generally considered pretty good; I have noticed extra calcium/water spots washing the car certain times of year before they increased supply a few years ago (they don't draw the pool so low now). But since I was building a new house, it seemed 1. easy to put in a couple of filter stages during plumbing 2. sensible to do something to help protect the tankless heater even a little more than the AP110-2 whole house sediment filter. So I'll do some more research. I had so much going on with the build; mostly I wanted to ensure I got these two canisters plumbed in. Looks like maybe a more comprehensive first stage/whole house then something very fine in front of the tankless may be best from what you're saying. Drinking water goes through a fridge filter that's obviously behind the whole house filter. Thanks again for the reply!
