Sulphur Odour Removal - Whole House

Hi, we have just bought a new house near Ottawa and the water from the drilled well has a sulphur odour. The previous owners had a softener installed and there is a well pump and pressure vessel in the basement.

What system would you recommend we install to remove the sulphur odour and where on the incoming line would we be best advised to install it?

Hydrogen Sulfide

The rotten egg (sulphur) smell that you are talking about is caused by the harmless gas Hyrdrogen Sulfide. Since you are trying to remove a gas, water filtration has little effect. The best way to remove the odor is drinking water aeration. If the concentration of Hydrogen Sulfide is very high, you may need to install a chlorinator and then a carbon filter to remove the chlorine, but this is rarely needed. We do not currently carry an aeration system, so we recommend you contact the dealer who installed the water softener.

Hello, I live in Virginia and have the exact same problem... have also had a "pressure" system installed that does not remove all of the sulfer smell...
I have contacted and they have a great system that can be put in your home.... I have NOT purchased it yet because I'm not quite sure if I want the entire system... However,... These sulfer smells are NOT coming from simple mixes of sulfer gas within the water itself, it's actually coming from a bacteria that produces the sulfer smells.... Thus the need for Chlorine treatment in the well as mentioned by the other responder.
My system already has the aeration and carbon setup and I can purchase just the "Chlorinator" that installs on top of your 6" well pipe. Good Luck,

sulpher smell

We just built a new home and have to this point spent almost $10,000. on a new well and now an aerator that without chemicals pulls the sulpher smell out. It has a pump attached, that unit itself was around $1,600. There is a small cabon filter that we bought at Lowes that aslo filters out alot of imputrities. We also put a gallon of bleach into the system weekly, at night so it settles. We are still having a problem with the iron, we smell it on our skin. When we fill the Jacuzzi the water has an orange tinge and so do the bubbles! Is there something out there anyone knows of that we can do for this without spending a fortune? thanks in Northwest Arkansas.

We hear this alot. Traditionally experts will recommend a water softener for iron removal, however these are quite expensive and since you've already spent alot of money I have a suggestion that might be worth looking into.

We have just added a new product from Pentek called the RFFE20-BB. This filter is designed to remove iron (you can read all about it be clicking on the hyperlink). But compared to what you've spent already this might be worth trying before investing even more into a softener.
