  • What is on the inside of my pipe?

When I installed the new taller water softener tank I had to cut the 3/4" copper lines going in and out of the softener. When I cut the outgoing line from the softener I noticed the inside of the pipe was coated in this thin black film. It's odorless and the line on the inlet side of the softener did not have this build up on it, just some iron rust. It bothers me to know that it's in there from the old softener. Any thoughts on what this black stuff could be and is it harmful to our health?

Hydrogen sulfide is likely in the water. Do you ever notice a rotten egg odor in your drinking water from time to time. I realize you stated it was odorless earlier, but this is a common sign of hydrogen sulfide which is seemingly the cause of the thin black film.

Thanks for the suggestion. We've never had any odor in the water that we've noticed. If it was hydrogen sulfide wouldn't both sides of the softener have the black film in the lines? Water test came back with only Iron of 0.5ppm and TDS of 98ppm. The iron rust is noticeable on the input side of the softener. I'm wondering if the high pH of 8.9 be the cause.

Do you know if it is on both the cold and hot water lines?

It's only on the supply line coming right out of the water softener to the house. There is no other noticeable black on the other plumbing or fixtures that I can see down stream from the output of the softener.
IMG_4654.JPGThe top pipe is the input from the well to the old softener and the bottom one is the output to the house.
